16th International Symposium on Nondestructive Characterization of Materials

Royal Sonesta Harbor Court Baltimore
Baltimore, MD
10 - 12 August 2021

Researchers from around the world will gather in Baltimore, Maryland to share nondestructive characterization research with their colleagues who are actively engaged in advances in nondestructive evaluation technology. This symposium features presentations addressing issues of current and future interest, covering both theoretical and experimental work. Featured will be presentations about state-of-the-art developments and applications where the complex nature of materials is recognized. Additionally there discussions on the applications and possibilities for multi-technique measurements of interdependent parameters and the evaluation of the data through sophisticated computer analyses.

  • Keynote: Dr. Joseph A. Turner, Robert W. Brightfelt Professor of MME, Mechanical and Materials Engineering University of Nebraska-Lincoln
  • Feature Speaker: Dr. Justin S. Jones, Senior Materials Engineer, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center

Joe Turner

Keynote Speaker I

Ultrasonic characterization of microstructure with applications for hybrid additive manufacturing of metals

Joseph A. Turner | Robert W. Brightfelt Professor of MME, University of Nebraska-Lincoln

About the Speaker

Joseph A. Turner is currently the Robert W. Brightfelt Professor of Mechanical and Materials Engineering and Director of the Nano-Engineering Research Core Facility (NERCF) at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). He received his B.S. (Eng. Sci.) and M.Engr. (Eng. Sci. Mech.) degrees from Iowa State University and his Ph.D. (Theoretical and Appl. Mech.) from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). After a postdoctoral experience at UIUC, he served as an Alexander von Humboldt Postdoctoral Fellow at the Fraunhofer Institute for Nondestructive Testing (IZFP) in Saarbrücken, Germany before joining UNL. He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and recipient of the Wilhelm Bessel Forschungspreis from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation. His expertise in ultrasonic scattering has applications for many types of microstructures including those found in additively manufactured metals.

Justin Jones

Keynote Speaker II

In-Space Inspection Needs: Opportunities for NDE tools such as x-ray CT for additively manufactured parts, in-situ resource utilization, geological applications, and more.

Dr. Justin S. Jones | Senior Materials Engineer , NASA Goddard Space Flight Center

About the Speaker

Dr. Justin S. Jones is the NDE Subject Matter Expert and a senior Materials Engineer for the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. An alumnus of the Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Jones has worked at NASA GSFC since 2010. Aside from regular duties as GSFC’s NDE lead, Dr. Jones has recently focused efforts on the NDE of additively manufactured parts, NDE in support of geology for planetary exploration, and advocating the use of NDE inspection tools for in-space applications.

About Baltimore

Today’s Baltimore is a vibrant city that honors the past while keeping a keen eye on the future. There are several “must see” activities to include in your trip including the largest public collection of Matisse in the world, the inner harbor, the National Aquarium. You could even enjoy a Baltimore Orioles baseball game the week of the Symposium! For more information about these attractions, and everything Baltimore has to offer, see the Visit Baltimore website. Baltimore is also a short train ride from Washington D.C. and all of the attractions of the United States capital.

Getting There

Located just nine miles south of Baltimore—and 32 miles from Washington, D.C.—Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) offers travelers more than 500 flights daily on 36 airlines to and from cities across the U.S., as well as Toronto, Reykjavik and Punta Cana, among its 13 international destinations.

If traveling by car, there are plenty of parking options in Baltimore. Keep an eye out for street parking but be sure to double check nearby signs for restrictions or costs. Reserve a spot in a garage or lot ahead of time (and possibly save some money) with online services like Parking Panda and Spot Hero

Unauthorized Housing Warning

Unfortunately, it is now common practice for unauthorized companies to claim to be official housing providers for trade shows and other large events, including ASNT conferences. Usually called “room poachers,” these companies target exhibitors and attendees with aggressive emails or phone calls claiming to offer supposed discounts on hotel rooms or incorrectly stating that room blocks are nearing or at capacity. The room poachers often don’t deliver on promises to customers. When customers arrive, reservations are non-existent or the hotels are not conveniently located. Sometimes the rooms have been cancelled and hefty cancellation fees have been placed on the customer’s credit card.

Please be vigilant if contacted by any company or service that implies or claims to be an official housing provider for ASNT. ASNT IS NOT affiliated with third-party travel agents, wholesalers or other outside agencies claiming to offer hotel reservations. The only way to book your rooms for ASNT is to use the channels provided on our website. If you are contacted by one of these pirate companies, please notify ASNT staff immediately. Below are company names that have been provided to us by our members, attendees and exhibitors. This list is not complete and new company names will be added as we are made aware of them.

  • Corporate Booking Services – CBS International
  • Global EXPO LIST
  • Global Housing Services, Corp.
  • Travel Group Partners / TGP Marketing Corp.
