Dr. Ahmed Arabi Hassen is a Staff Scientist at the US Department of Energy (DOE) - Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Dr. Hassen has a wide experience in different composite materials processing methods including long/short fiber thermoplastics, compression molding, injection molding, vacuum forming, and thermoplastic extrusion to name a few. He is currently working on development and characterization of fiber reinforced materials for Additive Manufacturing (AM) extrusion deposition processes especially for Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) systems. Ahmed is leading ORNL's development efforts for AM molds and dies for composite manufacturing industry. He also has a broad experience in the field of composite characterization using destructive and Non-Destructive Testing/Evaluation (NDT/E) techniques such as ultrasonic testing, acoustic emission and X-ray techniques. Dr. Hassen has coauthored numerous peer reviewed publication while also receiving various honors and technical awards such as two 2017 R&D 100 awards.
Dr. Hassen is currently the ASNT Research Council Program Committee Chair, serving as a member of the Financial Awards Committee and act as an active member of the Research and Section Operation Councils. He has also served as the Regional Director for the Region 6 and led an effort to retrieve the ASNT local section in Birmingham, AL after being dormant for over 10 years. This section was also awarded the ASNT President's Bronze Award for 2014-2015 under his leadership. He was appointed as the Program Co-Chair for the ASNT 26th Research Symposium held in Jacksonville, FL. Ahmed is an active participated in ASNT events, where he has organized and chaired several sessions. He has also served as the guest editor for the April 2018 special issue on NDE for Additive Manufacturing in Material Evaluation Journal.
