Submit a Paper to Materials Evaluation

Materials Evaluation (M.E.), the flagship journal of the American Society for Nondestructive Testing, is an abstracted, archival, peer-reviewed journal. Published monthly, Materials Evaluation welcomes original papers on NDT applications and on applied NDT research. Subject matter may cover traditional and nontraditional areas of nondestructive testing.

Technical Papers vs. Feature Papers

We accept two different types of papers for Materials Evaluation: Feature Papers and Technical Papers. What's the difference? Check out the table below. What type of paper are you interested in submitting?

  Technical Paper  Feature Paper
Length? Between 3,000 - 5,000 words Between 2,000 - 3,000 words
Printed Abstract and Keywords? Yes No
Peer-Reviewed? Yes: rigorous technical review by an Associate Technical Editor and at least two additional peer reviewers.
 Yes: a less-rigorous, generally faster review by either one Associate Technical Editor or three peer reviewers.
Purpose? Constitute thorough, original contributions to the applied science of NDT.
 Examines the use of NDT in a specific application or in the context of a particular industry, standard, or event.
Details? Generally more research and experimentation based, so should include findings, results, and data.
 Can also include articles on history, trainings, or education related to NDT

Back to Basics Articles

Back to Basics articles are considered feature articles. They are tutorial or introductory pieces written to introduce a topic to the reader or to provide a refresher. No prior knowledge (except a general understanding of NDT) from the reader should be assumed. Submissions should follow the same guidelines as a standard feature article.
